I played like 6k battle on WoT before first touching an arty. He had to closely watch the minimap the entire time, move together with his team always just behind the TDs (to minimize shell travelling time and dispersion), predict where the enemies will be (because of aim time), and such. If you see an arty player with high dmg in post-battle results, it wasn't a dude who was sitting in spawn, picking his nose with one hand, while clicking with the mouse with the other. And then getting spotted by a light tank because one flank was incompetent, getting immediately destroyed and having to listen to your team complaining about 'arty is not doing its job'. Perfectly calculating the lead and travel time, and still missing due to rng. That you had to predict will be there 10 seconds ago or longer (to start aiming there). Imagine shooting from the KV-2 with a dead loader and gunner across the entire map. The shell velocity is slow, reload 20s and more, aim time takes about as long as reloading and dispersion is huge.
So right after shooting, while the shell is still in the air, you need to move. So they shoot there, often one-shotting you. Many pre-aim on the usual arty spots and the moment you take a shot they see which bush the shell left from. Because of the hills and buildings in the way, when you decide to cover a flank you need to know which few spots you can go to to have a shot - you can't just decide 'Ok, now I will turn around to shoot that flank from this same spot'.Īlso, the arty players like to target enemy arty the most.
So an arty player needs to relocate to a different spot if he wants to have a good game, and to have a perfect knowledge of the map. Sitting in spawn and shooting stationary tanks only works on newbs, the rest of the players knows which spots are usual arty-danger zones to avoid (just like with TD-danger zones). As a WoT PC boomer, allow me to explain that it's not as simple.
